Candidate Connection

Shawn Still completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2022. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Still's responses. Candidates are asked three required questions for this survey, but they may answer additional optional questions as well.

Expand all | Collapse all

Still is a nationally recognized speaker and leader in the swimming pool industry, growing his second-generation company into the largest firm in the Southeastern US, employing over 100 Georgians. He is the father of three daughters and has lived in Johns Creek since before it was a city. He’s been a proud Georgian since 1998 and has family roots in the state going back two centuries.

In politics Still has had a meteoric rise before stepping up to run for state senate. Among his achievements are pulling the Georgia GOP out of financial insolvency in 2019, then serving as the finance chairman for the state party, helping raise a record $48 million in 2020 for President Trump and others. His was one of only two lawsuits in State Superior Court against the Secretary of State in 2020 for election irregularities. The other lawsuit was filed by Chairman Shafer and President Trump.

His proudest moment was serving as a Republican nominee for Presidential Elector pledged to Donald Trump and Mike Pence in 2020. For his role as secretary of the delegation he was subpoenaed to testify before Congress for his role in defending our state elections.

  • Eliminating drop boxes must be our first priority to securing our elections.
  • On education, I will oppose all divisive education concepts from being taught in our schools. In addition, I will fight for girls' sports through college.
  • We must eliminate the state income tax. If our neighbors in FL and TN can do it, so can GA. We must do this to remain the #1 state in which to do business.

Still stands for reducing taxes, making Georgia a great place to live and do business, and will fight for free choice for our children and our healthcare decisions. He will vote against any bill involving CRT, DEI, or any other divisive curriculum. When elected, his first goal will be to amend S.B. 202 to eliminate drop boxes to stop the steal from ballot harvesting.

Protecting girls in their respective sports, as well as protecting their scholarship opportunities in college, is another critical issue.

Income tax reform is one which Georgia must be more competitive. As a successful businessman, Still will bring that acumen to the state Capitol to overhaul this critical infrastructure item.

I look up to my uncle, Rick Still, Sen. Bruce Thompson, and GA GOP Chairman David Shafer. Throughout my life, my Mother was my hero.

A leader whose example I greatly admire is Dwight D. Eisenhower. He helped create the concept of "modern Republicanism" that helped the party attract more swing voters and solidify our base. He expanded Social Security and prioritized a balanced budget over tax cuts. He put tens of thousands of soldiers returning home from war to work by creating the Interstate Highway System, the largest non-military job program in our history.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I am still an idealist and want to serve the people in my district with only honorable intentions.

Integrity, honesty, hard working, and unafraid to make difficult decisions.

Successful in business, unafraid of making difficult decisions, availability to make this a full-time profession for as much time is needed throughout the year.

Openness, availability to all constituents, and willingness to hear contrasting points of view.

Safer elections, lower taxes, better schools, and healthier environment

I witnessed the Challenger Space Shuttle launch and disaster when I was 13 years old. Our class walked outside to see it because it was a daytime launch, and we could clearly see the explosion.

My first job was a bus boy and dish washer in a seafood restaurant. I worked there for three years.

A Pirate Looks at Fifty by Jimmy Buffett. I've read this book more than any other because it's a great reflection of someone's life of achieving something they never thought possible, and being thankful for how it all seemed to work out.

Hiding my emotions. I am incapable of masking my facial expressions if I disagree with something someone is saying.

There should be open dialogue, sharing of ideas, and input given from both parties throughout the year, not just during the 40 days of session.

Election integrity and tax reform are our two greatest challenges.

The drawbacks are many in that it severely limits the ability to have a variety of ideas and input. Since only 1 state out of 50 follows this method, I do not foresee GA adopting this concept.

No, but I do believe it is important for anyone in office to have accomplished something in their lives so that they have perspective in life before writing and voting on the laws that will impact the lives of their citizens.

Absolutely! I have spent many years building relationships with members of my state legislature and will not have much of a learning curve if elected. It is critical to know how a person thinks so that one can maximize the time spent discussing policy.

I believe it needs to be limited to connected geography, not splitting precincts, and to be drawn to meet the ever changing population shifts.

Economic development and tourism, natural resources and environment, and appropriations

My campaign manager, Olivia, has grown up in this district. She was the first female to be a kicker on her high school football team at Northview. She remains an incredible role model for young women looking to be the best they can be in their respective sport, even crossing over to boys' sports. She attended college on a full scholarship, graduating with honors. She will start law school this fall on a full scholarship as well. I cannot wait to see the impact she makes on our community, state and country one day!

In most cases no, because the legislature only meets for 40 days a year unless in the case of a critical situation. If it's a matter of lives being affected, then no, it would take too long to convene the legislature to take a vote.

Compromise is a necessity in policymaking, just as it is in life. Hard lines make it impossible to get work accomplished.

Criminal indictment by Georgia grand jury (2023)

See also: Georgia prosecution of Donald Trump, 2023-2024

On August 15, 2023, Shawn Still was one of 19 defendants criminally charged in a grand jury indictment related to interference in the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.[5] Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) filed the indictment in Fulton Superior Court in Georgia, and the case was set to be heard by Judge Scott McAfee.[6]

Still was charged with 7 criminal counts. Still pleaded not guilty.[5][7] Click here for a more detailed list of the charges.

The indictment included a total of 41 criminal counts related to interference in Georgia's 2020 presidential election results against 19 defendants, including former President Donald Trump (R), former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former Georgia Republican Party Chairman David Shafer, and Georgia State Senator Shawn Still (R), among others.[5]

The indictment followed a special grand jury investigation into whether Trump and his allies attempted to change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The grand jury convened in May 2022, and completed its investigation in January 2023.[8]

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
