Come here often for bulk herbs, snacks, cookies, The "daily discount table", and Zenys spring water, which i buy, by the case $54...this natural market is an Oakland staple and i have great memories coming here with my mom as a child. They're still running strong.

Was looking for probiotics and some cleansing tea and found that and more here.
They have everything from peanut butter to pack it yourself charcoal.
Everyone was willing to help and was friendly.
A good neighborhood supplement store.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 1 - Dominic A.Walnut Creek, CA12815Apr 27, 2024
I love the low-key, neighborhood feel of this store. Wonderful resource for bulk foods.

Oh Food Mill how I love your baked bars. Years ago, a friend introduced me to the date nut bar from here. Luckily they were also sold at the old Rite Aid on Broadway which satisfied my cravings but this is long gone. Now, whenever my travels take me down 580, I make a special stop for the bars.
Today, they had this generous bags of bits for $3.29 which is the same price as the bagged cookies and bars. I consider this a deal as there are multiple flavors in here in addition to the date nut. There is oatmeal and honey too.
I love the spiciness and softness of these cookies. And, they are a local natural food store in Oakland. They have their own parking and the staff is very friendly and nice.

Hi Inverleith,
Thank you for the great review.
You’re getting out the secret of our famous FoodMill cookie bars, a customer favorite for almost 90 years.
Everyone needs to give ‘‘em a try.
My first job in High school was pack the cookie bars after school.
I had my share.
Sincerely,

My parents shopped here when I was a child living in San Leandro then Hayward in the 1970s. The cookies remind me of times passed and I love them. I now live on the other side of the tunnel and wish I could buy them closer to home but I cannot find them anywhere. They are my favorite cookies ever!!!

If you don't already shop at The Food Mill, you should start. It's a health food store that's been in Oakland since 1933. My current obsession is their crunchy peanut butter. You get a giant jar for under $10. It's freshly ground, so fluffy, nothing is added, and no stirring is needed! They also have a thousand bulk items, hard to find ingredients, fresh baked treats, lots of tasty fake meats, and the staff is so lovely and helpful.

I knew them only from "Food Mill" nut butters sold elsewhere. Then driving by I went, wow, this must be the place. It's a nice locally serving natural foods type store with an extensive back area devoted to nuts and grains. Worth a stop!

The staff there are super helpful. I had not been in this store since my mom brought me here, that was over forty years ago. Same nostalgic smell, healthy. Variety of anything you were looking for and the staff provide options and recommendations. Didn't see my old school cookies, but didn't ask either. I will when I go back

I love the Food Mill! Have gone there since it was recommended to me by a friend's mother when I was a teenager. I'm never in there w/o buying sunflower sesame bars (cookies).
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Nov 15, 2007Previous reviewMy daughter came from Washington to get her fix of Sunflower Sesame Bars. This is where I learned what a cool, chewy thing gluten bread is. I've gone to this Food Mill since I went to Bret Harte across the way and it's always felt the same inside. Sure it's gotten bigger (YIPPEE!), but it still ~feels~ the same. An extra nifty store that has managed to maintain the original vision of providing pure, healthy ingredients, prepared foods, supplements, and the other necessities of life. Go here for whole-grain anything, fresh-pressed whatever, and to be treated like a customer should be.
