Today we are releasing the very first version of our „Made with Biology Funding Napkin 2023", essentially answering the question: What does it take to raise capital for Synthetic Biology startups in 2023? With the aim of providing guidance to entrepreneurs and fellow investors, the article contains a set of key milestones to hit from Pre-Seed to Series A. The data is based on 167 funding rounds in Europe and the US that we observed in 2022 triangulated with external sources. I’d like to thank Point Nine for the inspiration and the original idea! I would add Project Management to Team - having served in this capacity across the matrix shared for syn-bio companies (Amyris, Perfect Day, Flagship, Ginkgo and numerous startups in the sector) - some who have thrived, others not. Project Managements ability to help keep the team aligned on strategy, focus, provide process where process is useful and drive tough conversations around tradeoffs can't be overstated.

Super useful for founder! It aligns very well with what we have heard too. Another thing people have asked us often is revenue potential of the various segments we can serve and have a clear scale up strategy with the commercial relationship in place with the CMOs (we are soon at seed)
