How do you react when something goes positively in your life? How do you react when something goes negatively in your life? Most of us react differently when good and bad things happen to us. When something goes good, we act like we influenced the outcome and when something goes bad we act like there are outside forces that are conspiring against us. In reality, we probably have less influence on things when they go right and more influence on things when they go wrong. The one constant when things go good or bad is your outlook or your disposition. How will you respond to what is occurring, good or bad? We can decide if we want to lash out or lose control when things go bad in the same way we can think our good fortune is all about us and what we did to allow fate to shine on us. We can always find the good in the bad if that is what we choose. Here are 5 tips to take when things aren't going the way you want: 1. Determine what went wrong. 2. Focus on the good or the lessons you can learn from the negative outcome. 3. Ask others for their input. 4. Decide what is necessary for you to keep moving forward. 5. Don't quit. Try again. You can use these five tips when things are going your way as well. We seem to spend more time focusing on why things went wrong than we do on why things went right. You will face challenges in your life in the same way you will experience successes. No matter how well you plot or prepare, most plans don't survive the first contact with the enemy. It's important to debrief after every event, meeting, or mission and to have a Plan B, Plan C, Plan D. etc. Being resilient when things go good or bad is one of the most important ways to be fulfilled and happy in life. Please take a few minutes and watch the video below to learn how one of golf's greatest golfers handled the good and bad times. Also, leave me a comment about how you handle the ups and downs of life. How often do you make a bad decision?
What causes you to make the wrong or a bad decision? In his book, Legacy, author James Kerr writes, "Bad decisions are not made because of a lack of skill or innate judgment. They are made because of an inability to handle pressure at a pivotal moment." History is filled with bad decisions. Napoleon was defeated in his attempt to conquer Russia due to his generals exaggerating his troop and supply strength because Napoleon would reprimand and often demote anyone who brought him bad (even if it was realistic) news. More recently, in 1985, Coca-Cola introduced New Coke. The company taste-tested the new formula with over 200,000 people. Unfortunately, they forgot to research if consumers wanted a new flavor of the iconic beverage. It turns out, they didn't and the company lost tens of millions of dollars on the short-lived product introduction. According to a LinkedIn article written by Darren Matthews titled, "Bad Decisions: 5 Rules To Help You Make Bad Decisions, here are five things to help you make better decisions: 1. Don't make important decisions when you are emotional, tired, hungry, distracted, or in a hurry. 2. Don't let anyone define the problem for you. 3. Get your information as near to the source as possible. 4. Always ask, "What do I know to be true?" Filter out incomplete information. 5. Reflect on your decision to learn what worked and what didn't. Nobody is perfect. We all make bad decisions. By knowing yourself and making rules and decision-making principles, you can minimize the amount of bad decisions you make. Please leave me a comment about the principles and techniques you use to make better decisions. Please check out my latest audio recording from the Proactive Is The Way Podcast With Toyia Bryant. How do you feel when you are left out of the communication loop? Does it make you feel angry, sad, and like you have a lower status within the company of the group? Being left out of the loop stings regardless of whether it was intentional or not. Here are some ways to cope with your emotions when you feel like you're the only one who, "Didn't get the memo!" 1. Understand that people who care about you won't leave you out of the loop on purpose. Give others the benefit of the doubt when everyone else seems to have information you don't have. 2. Instead of letting your emotions get the best of you, reach out to friends whom you may not have communicated with in some time. By doing this you are preventing others from feeling "uninvited." 3. Talk to the person who initially communicated the information to figure out why you may have been excluded. Hopefully, this discussion will provide you with greater insight as to why you were left out. Being excluded from an important communication highlights the negative feelings we all feel when we are left out. This illustrates the importance of being effective communicators and the necessity of over-communicating rather than under-communicating. Check out the short video below to learn more about the importance of keeping people informed so they feel a part of the group. Also, leave me a comment about your thoughts on how you handle situations where you are left out of the communication loop. |
