Rewiring our cities is vital: a call to action
Time and again, innovations in transportation lead to transformative shifts in the design and development of our urban areas. Infrastructure that once made it easy to zip across a city by car no longer suits today’s mobility needs. Our streets and sidewalks must now accommodate not only greener mobility modes including bikes, light-electric vehicles, and delivery robots but profoundly shifting commuting patterns and activities. And this vast transformation – we call it the Mobility Revolution at CoMotion - is only just getting started.
Seven years ago, we made the decision to launch in the City of the Angels. We felt that this vast and infinitely creative urban region, the greatest car city of them all, could show the world a new paradigm of sustainable and equitable multimodal mobility – just as in decades past, Los Angeles had been the model for much post-World War II urbanization around the world. If Los Angeles can rewire itself, there is hope for all cities.
We are more hopeful than ever: we have before us a truly unprecedented opportunity to push through real transformation. Technological breakthroughs are accelerating as never before, just as lifestyles and work habits are changing in new and extraordinary ways. In a remake of the activist New Deal policies of 90 years ago, the U.S. federal government is bankrolling massive spending on the infrastructure needed for a post-carbon world. All of this has a special urgency for Los Angeles, with a once-in-a-generation chance to leverage the transformational possibilities of hosting both the World Cup in 2026 and the Olympic and Paralympics Games in 2028.
We call on all cities, big and small, to begin the necessary work of rewiring their transit systems, rebuilding their infrastructure, and promoting policies that boost innovation. Let us embrace an exciting multimodal future of expanded transit, safe and reliable autonomous vehicles, Advanced Air Mobility options, and other clean mobility solutions that seamlessly connect goods and people from land, sea, and airports to all corners of the region.
This is your chance to be a part of the conversation and shape the Mobility Revolution. And by the way: get your CoMotion LA pass now and get a 50% discount!
