We did it! Thank you to the 12 volunteers who came out to plant native perennials on April 6. Thanks also to all the many other volunteers over the past 5 workdays. The hillside is now stabilized and soon will be filled with blossoms from the azaleas, rhododendron, black-eyed susan, foam flowers, milkweed and many others that will add beauty and attract pollinators.

The Friends of Sons and Daughters of Ham received a grant to repair the erosion on the hillside where the old path connected the neighborhood to Bandy Field. Erosion along this path came from years of it being included in the cross-country course for local high schools and the University of Richmond, as well as mountain bikes using it as a cut through. Graves discovered nearby by archaeologists were in danger of being impacted and the path was unsafe and slippery for people to use.

Thanks to neighbors, students from local high schools and the University of Richmond, we began a big remediation effort on December 2, 3 & 9. Wattles made from fallen logs and branches were used to stabilize the slope and topsoil purchased through the grant was placed in between the wattles one wheelbarrow full at at time so as to preserve the integrity of the graves and artifacts nearby. 36 shrubs selected by the descendants were added to help anchor the slope further. Already, the erosion has been stopped and runoff into a nearby creek has been diverted by our efforts. A future workday in February will address the lower end of the slope and give us an opportunity to add more native azalea, sumac and rhododendron.
